Legal Administrative Specialist

If selected for this position, you will serve as a Legal Administrative Specialist for the United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Virginia. Typical work assignments will include:
Research, analyze, and summarize relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases. Analyze records to isolate facts pertinent to distinct legal issues. Support the investigative or trial team in its interviews of agents and potential witnesses to assist the Attorney in preparation for grand jury or trial. Organize reviews, summarize and outline grand jury and/or trial testimony to assist the Attorney in preparation for grand jury or trial. Provide advice to attorney and other legal support staff on the most effective and efficient ways to prepare present and maintain a variety of administrative legal documents. Assist in receiving, evaluating and producing discovery in criminal cases in compliance with the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedures. Prepare and maintain a variety of trial related documents such as witness lists, exhibit lists, jury instructions, and subpoenas. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, you must have one of the following:

At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include the following:
assisting and training attorneys and legal support staff in organizing case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing, and controlling of documents into a data base; assisting with information technology staff in diagnosing and resolving litigation support computer system problems and customizing databases and programs modified to meet individual user needs. OR- Possess one full year of graduate education. OR- Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. (Only graduate education in excess of 1 full year is creditable. To calculate your percentage of education, first determine the total number of hours that exceed 18 semester hours or your school's definition of one full year of study. Then divide the total number of your excess semester hours by 18 or your school's definition of one year of study. To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. For example, if you had if you had 9 months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7, then you would have 75% of the required experience. If you also had 27 semester hours of creditable graduate level education, then 27-18=9 semester hours. 9 divided by 18 is 50% of the required education, and therefore, 75%
50% = 125%. You would qualify for this position). OR- Possess a Bachelor's Degree or expect to complete the requirements for a Bachelor's degree within the next 9 months AND possess at least one of the following criteria:
class standing in the upper third of the graduating class; an overall GPA of 3.0 OR at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in my major field OR based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; OR election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have one of the following:

Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include the following:
assisting attorneys and legal support personnel with court rules, regulations and procedures, analyzing and evaluating legal decisions and case files to identify relevant issues and potential evidence; recommending automated support methods for trials; customizing databases and programs for user needs; assisting with trial preparation and presentations, and assisting attorneys with automatic evidence presentation in court; preparing motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas and legal briefs, summaries of analyses and decisions, and pre-trial documents. OR- Have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. OR- Have a combination of specialized experience and education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate level education must be in excess of 1 full years. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate hours that exceed 36 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of study). Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
